Location: 22211 US Highway 19 N., Clearwater, FL 33765

Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 6:30 AM 5:00 PM

Surveyors and Mappers play an important role in the lives of all citizens because they are crucial in determining land boundaries and elevations, as well as being essential partners in all phases and types of land development and construction. This is skilled technical and highly independent work in land surveying. Employees in this position serve as the leader of a survey team, coordinate work, take notes, make sketches, interpret maps and plans, and perform survey computations. Work is completed under the direction of a licensed professional surveyor and mapper. The Survey and Mapping Division of Public Works has a variety of customers throughout Pinellas County with a major focus on supporting the Countys Capital Improvement Program and other initiatives. The Division consists of both office- and field-assigned staff. We are looking for a team player with a positive attitude that is action-oriented, accountable, tech savvy, and communicates effectively.

Essential Job Functions

  • Serve as leader (party chief) of a land surveying field team. Coordinate team tasks and activities, take notes, make sketches, and interact with the public
  • Train, direct, and instruct team members on surveying equipment, processes, principles, practices, and techniques
  • Oversee the operation and care of survey equipment (instruments, tablets/data collectors, vehicles)
  • Establish survey-grade project control and utilize survey equipment to locate boundary and topographic features for the preparation of maps, surveys, and exhibits
  • Read and interpret historical records and maps
  • Calculate data from field notes, plans, and deeds
  • Use various mapping and information systems and applications
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned

Position Specific Requirements

  • Florida Drivers License or Florida Commercial Drivers License and endorsement, if any.
  • Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
  • Basic computer skills

Education and experience:

  • High School diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED) and two (2) years of experience in land survey work; or
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.

Highly Desirable

  • Knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of land surveying as they relate to public infrastructure
  • Skill in the use of various land survey equipment and software, particularly Trimble products
  • Ability to perform technical computations, compile survey data and make technical drawings
  • Basic skills in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and GIS
  • Experience with Microsoft Windows and Office suite
  • Strong organizational skills

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles, techniques, and practices of land surveying
  • Knowledge of construction specifications, plans, and regulations relating to construction and higher-level mathematical applications to survey computations
  • Skill in the use of land survey instruments and equipment
  • Ability to direct and coordinate survey party activities and train crew members in various aspects of survey work
  • Ability to swim
  • Ability to use hand and power tools
  • Ability to operate motorized equipment and possession of sufficient physical stamina to work long hours outdoors under various field conditions and exposure to traffic, extreme heat, and rainfall
  • Ability to use computers and technical computer applications
